A Little Bit About Me

I first became interested in photography when I was about 9 years of age when my father gave me his old camera; a roll film Conway Popular box camera, which I still have today. It still works, although I haven't put any film through it for more years than I care to remember. Once I had saved up enough money I bought myself my first 'real' camera, a Zenith B SLR, and this is when photography really took a hold of me. Photographing anything and everything using black & white film and spending many long hours in my makeshift darkroom watching the 'magic' of images appearing from nowhere on the photo paper. I soon realised that my favourite subjects were landscape and wildlife, which was to go on and became a life long passion.

When I left school I was 'guided' into a career as a design engineer and little did I realise at the time that the creative side of me would be stifled and locked away with little time for photography. My passion still grew along with a craving for learning all aspects of photography. Reading countless books and magazines and practising skills and techniques when time allowed, my passion grew stronger and stronger to the point that I felt something had to change.

Encouraged by my wonderful daughter, Imogen, I eventually managed to pluck up the courage to leave the 'career' that was getting me down and grew to dislike for so many years. In 2014 I made a big decision to leave my past life and turn my love of photography and the outdoor world into a full time occupation. Having spent many frustrating years in engineering, I am now living my dream being outside in our wonderful country photographing the beautiful landscapes and wildlife of the British Isles.

One thing that my previous life as a design engineer did give me was the ability to pay close attention to fine detail and scrutinise everything which has helped enormously in my photography. As a result it has helped me become more connected with my suroundings and develop a greater appreciation of the marvelous landscape we have.

Poppy

Being a landscape photographer can be a fairly lonely pursuit and to keep me company I take along my adorable Border Collie, Poppy. She is a wonderful companion and anyone who has a dog will know the health benefits, both physically and mentally, that they bring. However, she doesn't help much with the photography thinking she is only coming along to play, insisting I keep her occupied by throwing a ball for her. When we go out without a ball she will always find a stick or two to play with. I love her to bits and wouldn't go anywhere without her.
