Wet, Wet, Wet

No, I'm not talking about the Scottish soft rock group, more about the weather we've been getting in the Lake District. I've been here for two weeks already and have managed to get out just a couple of times, and then it was between showers. Yes, it's been pretty wet but then you don't visit the Lake District and expect glorious Mediteranian sunshine, just a few dry days would be nice though.

I've been planning this shot of a jetty on Coniston Water before I had arrived here but the sky was always dull and featureless. Yes, I know it's been done hundreds of times before but any photographer that comes to the Lake District shouldn't go home without it.

This particular day was no different than the others with plenty of rain showers to make photography difficult. I was sitting inside my humble home (caravan) keeping an eye on the weather when the rain started to ease up and a break in the clouds appeared allowing the warm glow of the evening sun to push through. No time to waste, I jumped into my car and darted around to the other side of the lake and got set up. I managed to get just one shot, this one, when the heavens opened again, I tried to get another shot in but rain splatter on the lens ruined it. Soaking wet, I returned to base but not without the shot I set out for.

The last couple of days of my stay in the Lakes proved to be more successful with dry weather and a bit of sun. I managed to cram in two full days of shooting, one of which was spent at my favourite lake Wastwater. I like it here as it is one of the few places in the Lake District that is unspoilt by commercialism - no boats, no tea shops, no pay and display car parks etc., just a nice pub and small shop at Wasdale Head.

From a small car park toward the northern end of Wastwater there is a nice walk that follows Over Beck, a small river that runs between Yewbarrow and High Fell. Not far from the car park is this lovely little waterfall where it could be so easy to just sit and while away the hours if it wasn't for the wet ground you'd have to sit on - I must bring a chair next time.
